Everyone, everyone in this world of death, is looking for happiness and peace, yet the concepts of what that is, differ greatly. Everyone, with some very few exceptions or anomalies, here admits to the inevitability of death. Nonetheless, who really calls this world one of death? If this world is one of death, I would have to admit that I cannot find lasting happiness here. Whatever magic I might apply to fulfill my dreams, I will only end up in despair and loss and go through that pain.
Obsessed with your own thoughts and ideas of happiness, you can only follow their dictates and become what you think you think. It always starts with the idea of separation, you being a body, you as a body, trying to find comfort and safety amidst the chaos and dangers of this world. You seem to be on your own, alone and separate, autonomous, but you never can completely exclude the idea of God, although some try very hard. Somewhere in your mind you know "this world you seem to live in is not home to you." (Lesson 182, A Course In Miracles) You have an idea of God, even if you like to think there is no God. You still have the idea of Him.
The problem is not that. The problem is that you try to fit everything into your own concepts of what things are. You never let things simply be what they are, and let them be shown to you. And so you end up associating God with the world you know, with yourself as a body identity, and completely lose sight of the idea of wholeness or singularity. Yet without the idea of wholeness or singularity, the idea of God is meaningless. God is always the idea of power, and power cannot be opposed. There cannot be different, opposing powers. There can only be one power, one life, one mind. And that one has to be yours, whether you like it or not. You have no say in it. It is what you are, and further, you cannot not use it in every moment of your existence here. Of course here comes the idea of responsibility. If you are all power, you are the only one responsible for this world. In fact this world does not exist outside of you. All the horrors of this world are the effects of your thinking and actions. As much as you would like to protest and say, "no way, that asshole is not me, he is different from me in my own judgement", you will have to bring it back to your own mind, because there is only one power, and the change or split that you think has occurred within that, does not exist and has no effects.
That is the teaching of A Course In Miracles. That was the teaching of Jesus 2000 years ago, that is the teaching of Jesus in the Course. "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." (Matthew, 25:40)
"But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matthew 5:44-45)
Your enemy is you. That is the reason why you have to forgive him, and also the only reason why you can forgive him. If he really did to you what you thought he did as a separate entity, you could never forgive him. How could you? In that thinking you cannot forgive, and do not know what forgiveness is.
Whatever you do, you do it to yourself. If you forgive, you forgive yourself. You can only give to yourself, because there is only you.
The way to God is through your brother, in the positive as well as in the "negative" sense. He shows you who you think you are. He shows you either God's Son and Love or a hated and projected self-image. Many tried to find God through isolation in monasteries and caves. Finding God would be the moment of your release from the bondage of self, of self-will separate from everything that is, where you recognize and experience yourself as everything.
"Release is given you the instant you desire it. Many have spent a lifetime in preparation, and have indeed achieved their instants of success. This course does not attempt to teach more than they learned in time, but it does aim at saving time. You may be attempting to follow a very long road to the goal you have accepted. It is extremely difficult to reach Atonement by fighting against sin. Enormous effort is expended in the attempt to make holy what is hated and despised. Nor is a lifetime of contemplation and long periods of meditation aimed at detachment from the body necessary. All such attempts will ultimately succeed because of their purpose. Yet the means are tedious and very time consuming, for all of them look to the future for release from a state of present unworthiness and inadequacy.
Your way will be different, not in purpose but in means. A holy relationship is a means of saving time. One instant spent together with your brother restores the universe to both of you. You are prepared. Now you need but to remember you need do nothing. It would be far more profitable now merely to concentrate on this than to consider what you should do. When peace comes at last to those who wrestle with temptation and fight against the giving in to sin; when the light comes at last into the mind given to contemplation; or when the goal is finally achieved by anyone, it always comes with just one happy realization; 'I need do nothing.'
Here is the ultimate release which everyone will one day find in his own way, at his own time. You do not need this time. Time has been saved for you because you and your brother are together. This is the special means this course is using to save you time. You are not making use of the course if you insist on using means which have served others well, neglecting what was made for you. Save time for me by only this one preparation, and practice doing nothing else. 'I need do nothing' is a statement of allegiance, a truly undivided loyalty. Believe it for just one instant, and you will accomplish more than is given to a century of contemplation, or of struggle against temptation."(A Course In Miracles, Chapter 18, I Need Do Nothing)
I like the idea of loyalty. Everyone has a sense of loyalty. The question is loyalty to what. You can only be loyal to God's Will, for it is your own. Every other loyalty is misplaced and can only lead to destruction and death. That is not difficult to see if you accept the idea that there can only be one power.
So, let's look again at the idea of God. God is the everything that you are, the Source, the Self that you are. You can never be separated from it. That makes you what? As a human being, you are a liar from the beginning. All of your experiences of pain, sickness and death are not true, because you cannot change yourself. You cannot not be Who you are. There is no death. You are free. Whatever you make up for you to react to, to believe in, is of your own making and does not exist. You deceive yourself. Therefore, wake up. Come home, dreamer of death. Nothing is stopping you. Nothing and no one will judge you for what you thought you did. It is all over and gone. Therefore, you can be truly happy, eternally happy, joyous without opposite. That is what God is.
Your choice then is one between God and what you think you are. It is not really a choice at all, but you still have to make it, since you put yourself into this condition of separation.
A Course In Miracles is the way out of this, out of your dream of death, because it teaches you over and over again, to change your mind, and not to act upon your thoughts of death and separation. It tells you, you need a miracle. It offers you the miracle, that will shorten your time so you don't have to repeat, over and over again, what will never work for you. You are so lucky. Take advantage of that. Do nothing, for you can do nothing to make you happy. You can only rely or depend totally on God and be healed by His grace and Will. Forgiveness paves the way and opens your mind to God. He will do the final step Himself. Forgiveness is A Course In Miracles. You forgive yourself your illusions about yourself. You forgive yourself your old ideas about yourself. You forgive your brother your old ideas about him, who is as much God as are you.
